In-Ceiling Speakers Frequently Asked Questions

If you're undergoing a new build or renovation, talk to your builder as soon as possible as the cheapest and easiest method is for your electrician to wire up speakers while doing other electrical work.

If you're planning to DIY, this should be a relatively painless process. There are no specialised certifications needed for wiring speaker wire. The easiest way to install the cables is by running them through the attic and down the wall to your amplifier. It may take more wire, but it requires less skill. The first step is to plan out where everything will be located. The plan should include distances, studs, and any impediment. While buying in-ceiling speaker wire, allow 20% extra in case something comes up and add 1-2 meters at at the end so you can set your speaker on a ladder while installing.

In-ceiling speakers are great for rear surrounds and/or ATMOS height channels

The answer to this question depends on how many speakers you will be installing. If you have only two ceiling speakers, the optimal position will be 1-2 meters behind of the primary seating position and in line or wider than front speakers. With four speakers, you will want two in front of the seating position for ATMOS and two behind it. These speakers should be equal distances from the central seating position. We recommend the speakers are placed no more than 4 meters apart from each other and no closer than the width of your front speakers.

No, insulation should not touch in-ceiling speakers. Proper ventilation is necessary to prevent overheating. Insulation can dampen and muffle sound quality. Direct contact can also pose a fire hazard with some insulation materials. Ensuring proper installation will enhance performance, safety, and sound quality.

No, Jensen ceiling speakers are tuned to take advantage of large cavities, so boxing is generally not recommended. Only consider a rear box in situations with excessive dust and debris, or to minimise sound bleeding into other rooms. In 99% of cases, a rear box is unnecessary. For those exceptional cases, you can easily retrofit something like a Dynabox, which provides a foam rear enclosure.

14 AWG speaker wire is the safest option for your Jensen speaker set for under 15m runs. Any longer, you might want to step up to thicker 12 AWG speaker wire.

Yes, you will need a speaker amplifier to power your Jensen speakers as our in-ceiling speakers are passive. Your amplifier will also have streaming functionality for Bluetooth and AirPlay.
